Since January 2025 the unlicensed minor-work ceiling has been $1,000, and a proper classification is required below that figure anyway once a permit is needed or a worker is hired. The building department points homeowners straight at the state license lookup. On a home improvement contract the deposit may not exceed $1,000 or 10 percent of the price, whichever is smaller. A contract signed away from the contractor's own premises carries three days to cancel in writing, and five days for a signer aged 65 or over.

A mechanical permit covers any installation or modification of heating and cooling equipment inside city limits, and a homeowner may apply for mechanical e-permits directly.
